Janice Gaines already has Mary Mary’s Erica Campbell, Donnie McClurkin, Natalie Grant and Donald Lawrence co-signing her skills. That says quite a lot. But even without these mega-talents in her corner, Gaines is guaranteed to hook you from the very first listen.
Gifted with an effervescent soprano that soars into the rafters and an ear for soul-baring lyrics, Gaines is Motown Gospel’s next-generation game changer. Her refreshing yet fearless artistry—a daring fusion of mainstream and inspiration —reverberates with jubilant determination.
And what a ride it is. Over the course of seven more tracks, Gaines whisks listeners away on a whirlwind tour of what it feels like to be in God’s grace. She takes the anthem route on the atmospheric “Wait on You,” unabashedly proclaiming she’ll never let go of believing in all that He promises—no matter how long the wait. Built on a platform of up-tempo beats, “The Break-Up Song”.
For her first Motown Gospel album, Gaines collaborated with one of her “dream producers,” LaShawn Daniels. The Grammy-winning songwriter/producer behind such acts as Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Destiny’s Child and Tamar Braxton proved to be a kindred Christian spirit. Born in St. Louis and raised in Memphis, Gaines comes by her musical dichotomy naturally. Although her Methodist minister father and singer/songwriter/musician mother divorced during her childhood, Gaines describes herself as “a combo“ of the two. “I grew up with a conservative dad, whose favorite songs are hymns, and a creative, eccentric mom who listened to everything from Earth, Wind & Fire to Tupac.” In fact, Gaines and her older brother frequently traveled with their mother to her gigs as a singer in a top 40 cover band. One half of the Grammy® Award winning gospel duo and WE tv original series stars Mary Mary, Tina Campbell, is set to follow sister Erica Campbell’s lead and step out on her own. The singer will release her highly anticipated solo debut album, “It’s Personal” on May 7th. The record will be the first project released from GeeTree Creative, the company she and her husband, Teddy, recently started. The album, features the current single “Destiny,” which Tina debuted for an eager crowd at the premiere event for the fourth season of Mary Mary’s hit self titled WE tv show. The singer also performed “Destiny” to a captivated Good Morning America audience earlier this year. Showcasing Tina’s powerhouse vocals, “Destiny” is an inspirational song that reflects the singer’s journey and serves as a beautiful testimony to how far she’s come. Other tracks on the album include the spiritual “Only Jesus Did it” and the uptempo “Life.”
In addition to the brand new album, Tina will debut as an author with her upcoming book “I Need A Day To Pray.” As documented on the third season of “Mary Mary,” the singer/songwriter, wife, and mother of five faced some of life’s most overwhelming challenges. She credits her faith as one of the reasons she was able to overcome them. Through it all, Tina put some of her feelings and ideas into a journal which became the book. Both the book and the album will come together when Tina presents her new stage performance “An Evening With Tina Campbell: Tour”
Conquerors. That’s the best way to describe Mary Mary. The soul-stirring sister duo of Erica and Tina Campbell seemingly overcame it all in the last few years – winning yet another Grammy, inking a deal for season three of a groundbreaking originally scripted series, beating a vocal challenge, healing a marriage misstep, overseeing a change in management, launching a solo career for one sister and grieving the death of a parent. That’s enough to make anyone’s head spin. Yet, the sisters embraced each challenge and proclaim that this year is their best year yet.As Tina staunchly declares in her signature staccato: “Survive it. Persevere. Overcome it.”
Indeed. Mary Mary’s greatest story is that of overcoming. Thirteen years ago, no one could have predicted the far flung reach of the hit “Shackles (Praise You)” that went on to become a signature song and crossover smash. From there, Mary Mary would win four Grammy Awards, 2 NAACP Image Awards, four BET awards, two American Music Awards, one ASCAP award, and multiple Stellar & Dove Awards and release seven albums, the most recent being the multiple award winning compilation “Go Get It” ( 2012 Columbia Records, a Division of Sony Music Entertainment). Now a household name, the ladies are credited with ushering in a new generation of gospel stars solidly entrenched in the larger cultural milieu while also overtaking the pop charts. Ricky Dillard has enjoyed a triumphant, history-making year that will go down in record books both literally and figuratively. In June 2014, Light Records released Dillard’s ninth album, AMAZING. The live set marks the 25th anniversary of his notable choir, the New Generation Chorale, and is a sonic masterpiece that has been at the top of the charts since its debut. The album’s first single – the title track, “Amazing” – just became the longest running song at Gospel radio this decade, with a phenomenal 25 weeks in the #1 slot. This enormous accomplishment was instrumental in garnering Dillard a Grammy nomination for Best Gospel Album – his third nomination for a Grammy Award. Additionally, Ricky Dillard & New G is named as 2014’s Top Gospel Duo/Group in the year-end issue of Billboard Magazine (on stands December 12). Checkout our latest interview with Ricky now.
Grammy, Stellar, and Dove-Award nominated singer Anita Wilson keeps Urban Contemporary music alight with her unparalleled fusion of Gospel and Soul music. First finding recognition as part of the Grammy-award nominated ensemble Donald Lawrence & Co., Wilson’s beeline to the solo stage – via her debut album Worship Soul– came as a celebrated breakthrough. Recognized by the New York Times’ Ben Ratliff as one of “2012’s top ten albums” across all genres, Worship Soul wielded the memorable hits “Jesus Will” and “Speechless” and introduced the masses to Wilson as a new frontrunner for Urban Contemporary Gospel.
Her sophomore album, VINTAGE WORSHIP, follows in its predecessor’s stead by unveiling a collection of masterfully crafted tunes with ingredients of classic gospel, funk, soul, pop, and R&B. Citing gospel greats such as The Hawkins, The Clark Sisters and The Winans as musical influences for the album, Wilson also drew from a well of R&B/Soul favorites like Eddie Kendricks, Lalah Hathaway, Chaka Khan, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Evelyn Champagne King and many more to create a melting pot of sounds.
Before we went out of 2014 in-style, Anita stopped by our radio show with David Duane to catch up with him briefly. Not only was it a catch up session but it was call of “celebrate” for Anita’s recent Grammy nomination. Take a listen now !
