Luke Christopher Discuss “TMRW/Ystrdy” EP Projects | Tour Experience | & More on @MFWERadio

rsz__mg_1507_0Luke Christopher isn’t about to wait around for anybody. Instead of relying on singers or producers, the Los Angeles rapper can belt out a hook with the best of them, and he remains an accomplished producer and beat maker in his own right. On his two new EPs YSTRDY and TMRW for ByStorm Entertainment/RCA Records, his singular vision only starts to unfold, encompassing airtight rhymes, cinematic storytelling, keen wit, and a little bit of wisdom.

Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, music surrounded Luke. At a young age, his father turned him on to the likes of Elton John, U2, Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder. However, hip-hop found him one Christmas when 2Pac’s All Eyez On Me sat under the tree. In high school, he converted the bottom bed of his bunk beds into a makeshift studio. There, he taught himself how to rap, sing, and compose beats. By his seventeenth birthday, he was ready to be properly heard, and major labels clamored for this strangely soulful and emotionally expansive style. Checkout our new interview with Luke.

Being an artist is about fearlessly breaking the boundaries. K. Michelle takes pride in that part of her job.

Her first full-length album, 2013’s Rebellious Soul [Atlantic Records], flipped the script for R&B and enjoyed staggering success in the process.  Arriving at #1 on Billboard’s “Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums” chart and #2 on the Top 200, it made history as it became the highest Top 200 entry for a female R&B singer’s debut since 2001. In addition to yielding the hits “V.S.O.P.” and “Can’t Raise A Man”, the record spawned the Rebellious Soul Musical directed by Golden Globe-winning actor Idris Elba. She also solidified her place amongst music’s elite, garnering a Soul Train Award for “Best New Artist” and an NAACP Image Award for “Outstanding New Artist”.

Still, when it came time to work on her sophomore effort #AWBAH, K. Michelle wanted to pave a new path once again. On this Throwback Thursday, We share our interview from K. Michelle from 2013 as she discussed her debut album, “Rebellious Soul”.  So check it out now !

Vivian Green Discuss New Album “VIVID” | New Direction | & More with @MFWERadio

Vivid Album Cover

This album is fresh and spirited, sassy, and funny at times.€ Says Vivian Green of Vivid, her fifth studio album set to release in 2015 under Producer/Artist Kwame Holland’s label: MakeNoise/Caroline. €œ’It’€™s different from my other albums because of the energy; but very much still me.’ €œThe title is certainly fitting. Green’s prior work established her as a balladeer and this album will add to that; proving her ability to deliver feel-good upbeat records. Totally produced by Kwame, ( it is the first of Green’€™s to entice you to dance; colored with ballads that showcase her effortless vocal prowess. The stand-out first single ‘Get Right Back To My Baby’€ features a sample from Maze ft. Frankie Beverly’s classic ‘Before I Let Go€’. It has a current bounce that makes you want to move. Green’s voice is powerful, alluring, and beams over the track.

€œGreen has never followed trends, so don’t expect to hear her trying to mimic any. The music is hers and it’€™s the kind of record you want to take with you on a road trip, to the gym, and to the office. ‘Vivid gives the audience the fun, bubbly, and vibrant side of Vivian,’€ says Kwame, ‘A side that her family and circle of friends know well, but the listener rarely gets to witness.’€ Vivid is undoubtedly full of zeal. €œ’Broken’€ gives a strong adult approach to loves disappointments, while ‘Work’€ expresses energetic desire.

Stacy Barthe Discuss “BEComing” | Song-Writing | BET | & More with @MFWERadio from @EssenceFEST 2015

10610657_878630562157034_6364028162788262610_n

Like only the most daring and gifted of musical artists, Stacy Barthe transforms her own hurt into songs that uplift, inspire, and fortify the soul. On BEcoming—Barthe’s full-length debut for Motown Records—the Brooklyn-born singer/songwriter boldly details her experience with suicidal depression, her troubles with drinking, and the triumph and struggle of her 180-pound weight loss. Throughout the album, Barthe graces that storytelling with her gorgeously powerful vocals and the sophisticated songcraft that she first revealed in penning tracks for the likes of Katy Perry (“Hummingbird Heartbeat”), Rihanna (“Cheers”), and Miley Cyrus (“Adore You”). Raw and uncompromising yet stirring and sublime, BEcoming proves both aching and joyful in its exploration of the complexity of the human condition.

To create the slow-burning, genre-bending blend of R&B and soul heard on BEcoming, Barthe worked closely with executive producer Malay. Also teaming up with producers such as Benny Cassette (Kanye West, Sky Ferreira) and DJ Camper (Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown), Barthe relied almost entirely on live, organic instrumentation rather than programmed beats, samples, and loops. With featured artists including John Legend (who also serves as an executive producer) as well as Common and newcomer Ro James, the album achieves a timeless spirit but bears an urgency that makes even its quietest moments steeped in intensity and passion. “The album’s about my old self dying and about becoming the new me,” explains Barthe, who likens the metamorphosis captured on the album to a larva shedding its cocoon and emerging as a butterfly. “I used to weigh 380 pounds,” she continues, “so I’ve been cocooning all my life—waiting to become.”
