You’ve got to understand music’s traditions in order to reinvent them. Jordan Bratton certainly does. The 18-year-old singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer possesses a prodigious grasp on all aspects of music. His critically applauded 2014 mixtape, The Grey Area, and debut single “Danger 3” are wholly the products of his personal production and songwriting vision. Armed with a multitude of talents, he stands poised to truly break ground.

At only four-years-old, the New York native realized his innate passion for singing. Encouraged by his “musical” family, he joined the choir in Kindergarten and enjoyed his first moment in the spotlight singing a solo at Lincoln Center during the holidays. Young Jordan also learned the drums before picking up piano and organ at age eleven followed by guitar, bass, and even clarinet. Immersed in the likes of Earth Wind & Fire and Kim Burrell among other R&B and gospel icons, he even started performing live with his dad’s band as well as playing organ at church. Luke Christopher Discuss “TMRW/Ystrdy” EP Projects | Tour Experience | & More on @MFWERadio

rsz__mg_1507_0Luke Christopher isn’t about to wait around for anybody. Instead of relying on singers or producers, the Los Angeles rapper can belt out a hook with the best of them, and he remains an accomplished producer and beat maker in his own right. On his two new EPs YSTRDY and TMRW for ByStorm Entertainment/RCA Records, his singular vision only starts to unfold, encompassing airtight rhymes, cinematic storytelling, keen wit, and a little bit of wisdom.

Growing up in the San Fernando Valley, music surrounded Luke. At a young age, his father turned him on to the likes of Elton John, U2, Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder. However, hip-hop found him one Christmas when 2Pac’s All Eyez On Me sat under the tree. In high school, he converted the bottom bed of his bunk beds into a makeshift studio. There, he taught himself how to rap, sing, and compose beats. By his seventeenth birthday, he was ready to be properly heard, and major labels clamored for this strangely soulful and emotionally expansive style. Checkout our new interview with Luke.

Dee-1 Discuss “3 Ups” EP | RCA Inspiration | Touring | & More with @MFWERadio – @EssenceFEST 2015

Dee-1_Photo

Dee-1 honed his lyrical skills while balancing two careers, teaching middle school children by day and performing at rap shows at night. The New Orleans native’s love for hip-hop was born while attending Louisiana State University during a year filled with grief and heartbreak. 2005 was a very tumultuous year for Dee-1. First, his world was shaken to the core when his best friend was murdered during a robbery following a flag football game. Second, he experienced the pain of ending a five-year relationship with his high school sweetheart. Third, he watched his hometown of New Orleans endure the catastrophic flooding of Hurricane Katrina. Finally, his life flashed before his eyes when he was the victim of an armed robbery at gunpoint. Despite the difficult year, Dee-1 interpreted these events as a wake-up call to reaffirm his Christianity.

Dee-1 has also enjoyed the recognition from many of his peers in the music industry. Dee-1 has toured with chart topping and Grammy award winning artists, such as Macklemore, Lupe Fiasco and Lecrae. His online buzz sparked interest from various record labels, including New Orleans based Cash Money Records, however, Dee-1 opted to sign with RCA Inspiration in 2013. Featuring stand out singles, “Against Us” and “I’m Not Perfect,” the 3’S UP EP will be available everywhere digital music is sold on February 17, 2015. Bilal Discuss “In Another Life” | Collaboration with Kendrick Lamar | & More with @MFWERadio @ Essence Music Festival

HiRes_R_456_Bilal_PhotographerKawaiMatthews

It’s a simple query, famously crooned in 1971 by soul legend Marvin Gaye, amidst a continuing civil right struggle in a nation at war both domestically and abroad. It’s a question still being asked today. Yet Bilal, like Gaye, offers no answers, merely a deep pondering on the current times with his moody fourth studio LP, In Another Life . “I’ve always seen myself like a Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley or Curtis Mayfield,” the golden-voice singer says, pointing to three of his many musical inspirations. “They could speak politically, but still wanted people to have something to play at night, to make love.”

Bilal fully embraces that duality on In Another Life , informed by CNN headlines and producer Adrian Younge’s dusty melodies. On the uncanny lead single “Satellites,” he takes the perspective of an extraterrestrial visitor observing a world in ruin. “We’re making music that speaks to the times that we’re in,” says Bilal, who’s collaborated with everyone from Beyoncé to Justin Timberlake to Robert Glasper. “So we have to make something that people of the future can go back to and say, ‘This is the way it felt back then.’ There are beautiful, sweet moments on this album and there are dark moments.” Checkout our latest interview with Bilal from the Essence Music Festival 2015.
